Design > Photo Restoration

Have you ever wished you could repair that old, loved photo of days gone by which which has suffered from many hands, or simply the ravages of time. Why not restore it? Let us show you how Education Design can help you.

If you are going to take the trouble and expense of having a photograph restored, then obviously it is very important to you. We will treat the original with great care.

You can send it by registered courier by certified delivery. If you are in Buenos Aires, you can hand it/send it to us in person. You can in fact have the original returned on the same day. The work is largely digital and the photograph will be scanned in high resolution and converted into a digital file. Although it is sometimes useful to hold on to the original until the job is finished, it is not vital.

The process of scanning does not affect the original in any way, and the restoration is not effected directly on the original but on the digitalized version. The time the work takes will depend on the amount and type of work needed to restore the photograph.

The first step in the actual process of restoration is an analysis of the original to determine the type 'repair' work to be done. In cases of extensive damage it may be necessary to discuss the issue in order to decide the extent of the repair. Once you have made initial contact with us, we will maintain more direct contact in person, by telephone or by e-mail, as the situation permits. The original is scanned and results in a digital-image-file, a 'copy' which can occupy between one and twenty Mb, depending on the size of the photograph, and the depth of resolution needed. We create two copies of this file, the first one is stored on a CD as back-up and the second is the working copy to be repaired.

The details of the picture are seen in small particles called pixels.  When looking at an original one is not aware of them, but magnification x4 or x6 will show them. In addition to the main damage to be repaired, this will reveal 'unseen' scratches, specks and spots, etc...

We  care about photographs and what they represent, and we take care to maintain the 'personality' of the original, as it should not look like a modern photograph. We try to put the photograph 'back' to a state as close to the original as possible. If the original is in sepia, then you can choose either to reprint in sepia tone or with another color tone, or it can be printed as in gray-scale photograph. It is worth noting that to replace lost colours and tones will depend on how much of the original colors are still present.

You will be asked to decide on the print size. Many people want the original size, but often an adjustment needs making taking into account the size of the frame you are going to use. Enlargements will depend on the quality of the original, and the size of available print papers.

The restored print(s), original and (if you wish) a CD with archive files will be delivered to you by courier or personally. If the restoration process turns out to be longer than a week, we will show you proof of progress by placing the current version on a hidden page of Education Design's website and mail you the link which only you (and us) can see.

NB. The same process can be used to make instant 'antiques' from modern photos. In cases such as weddings, etc., this can be very romantic and is often received as a very nice gift.
